What does urban culture mean? Urban culture refers to the specific culture of the cities: art, music, attitudes of the people, customs and general atmosphere you get in each city.
And, inside the cities, urban tribes were also born: hippies, punks, skaters, townies, preppies, goths, techies... What do you know about urban tribes?
Let's get started with your journey around the city to meet urban tribes.
Keep in mind these important tips and rules:
- Read carefully and understanding what your tasks are.
- You are a team and you must work cooperatively. All the members of the team must do their work if you want to succeed.
- Remember that you will get a mark for these skills, too. The aim of the project is to learn about a topic and to practise your English, so remember to use it with your teammates.
- All the things you will learn during the time of the project are part of the contents and will be asked in the next exams (vocabulary, grammar, use of English). In addition, the products you hand in during and at the end of the project will get a mark that will be added to the appropriate percentage (20% listening comprehension; 20 % reading comprehension; 20 % writing; 20 % speaking; 20 % use of English).
HOW TO HAND IN YOUR PROJECT:
You will create a shared Google document in your group where you will write all the activities. This document must have a cover page with the project title and the group members' names. Before the deadline, you will send it to your teacher's classroom. DO NOT FORGET TO BRING YOUR HEADPHONES! DEADLINE: FRIDAY 22nd |
TASK 1- Read the explanation of what an urban tribe is. Afterwards, answer to the questions in the list.
An urban tribe is a group of people who behave according to the ideologies of a subculture that originates and develops in the atmosphere of a city.
Term coined by French sociologist Michel Maffesoli in his book "Le Temps des Tribus" (1988). In its original meaning, Urban Tribes are young city people that gather in relatively small, fluid groups. These groups share common interests that are, in general, different from the interests of mainstream culture.
Some critics and analysts say that the phenomenon of urban tribes is nothing more than a group of young people with a distinct common identity: the same aesthetic codes, the same identity symbols, the same rules, the same language, the same music. A whole ideology! They are a reflection of what they love or what they hate and of their own instincts.
The identity of each of these tribes vary according to their ideology and the individual, for example, while the skinheads have violent tendencies, the hippies do not compete against any group, they are pacifists.
QUESTIONS:
1. Do you know anyone who is a member of an urban tribe or some other social group?
2. What are, in your opinion, the advantages and disadvantages of being a member of such groups?
3. Your appearance shows your personality. Do you agree?
4. Do you know any other urban tribe that is not mentioned here?
